Yavatmal: Veteran pro-Vidarbha leader and founder of Vidarbha Janata Congress, Jambuwantrao Dhote passed away on Saturday morning around 3 AM after suffering from cardiac arrest. He breathed his last in Yavatmal. Jambuwantrao Dhote was known as ‘The Lion of Vidarbha’ and he was a former Member of Parliament from Nagpur constituency.
Jambuwantrao Dhote won his first election to Lok Sabha in 1971 from Nagpur as a Forward Bloc nominee on the symbol of ‘Lion’. Later in 1980, he joined Congress and won the Nagpur seat on the Congress ticket. The lion symbol stuck with him for a long time and for all contributions he made for Vidarbha, Dhote was called as the ‘Lion of Vidarbha’. He was the son in law of veteran Congress leader late Ramrao Adik. He has also been elected to Maharashtra Assembly five times. In September 2002, he founded Vidarbha Janata Congress Party.
The former MP was known for his demands of a separate state for Vidarbha and recently while campaigning for Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti elections, Jambuwantrao Dhote had attacked leaders like Uddhav Thackeray, Narayan Rane, Raj Thackeray and other leaders stating that the people of Vidarbha will not pardon them for their opposition to the formation of a separate state of Vidarbha.
The last rites of Jambuwantrao Dhote will be performed in Yavatmal on Sunday. Dhote will be remembered as the firebrand leader who has been fighting his entire life for the cause of Vidarbha.
